Fourth-graders Hank, Ashley, and Frankie are excitedly preparing for a magic show at the Rock 'N Bowl when Hank's creative alternative to an English essay lands him in detention and grounded the week of the show.

Hank enters a robot-building contest at school and hopes to win a trophy, despite getting a late start, with help of Frankie, Ashley, and Jaden, a new friend and robot expert.

When a well-known author visits their school, Hank and his two best friends get the chance to be her guide for the day and introduce her at an assembly, but the situation forces Hank to find creative ways to hide his struggles with reading.

Hank has never been fond of his sister's pet iguana, and their relationship worsens when she lays her eggs inside his science project.

Hoping to land the lead in the class play, Hank freezes during his audition and is only able to buzz like a fly, inspiring his teacher to create a special role for him as a silent bookmark that saves the show when a rival suffers an attack of stage fright.

With the help of his grandfather, underachieving fifth-grader Hank Zipzer finally discovers that he is good at ping-pong, but he is afraid to tell his classmates for fear of being ridiculed.

When the principal has to be away from school at a conference, Hank's class agrees to take care of the principal's special pet frog, and Hank is chosen to take the frog home for the weekend.

While accompanying his mother at the deli, Hank suffers a series of embarrassing accidents that cause teachers visiting the deli to go hungry, a situation that compels him to express his appreciation for his teachers' hard work.
