Description
Eunice W. Johnson grew up believing in the beauty and dignity of Black people. As an entrepreneur with a flair for fashion, Mrs. Johnson wanted to use her talents and impeccable taste to serve her community. When she and her husband noticed that magazines often printed stories showing Black people in a negative light, they founded the Johnson Publishing Company -- and Ebony magazine was born. Mrs. Johnson's style column for Ebony called "Fashion Fair," featured dazzling images of Black women wearing fabulous outfits. The popularity of the column grew into Ebony Fashion Fair -- a cross-country fashion show fund raiser featuring Black models wearing the latest styles. Each year the gala grew in glamour and popularity as it illuminated the fashion world's idea of Black elegance." -- Front cover flap
