"The Martin Bluem family left their native Germany in the 1850s in search of a better life. They didn't find it. After becoming one the first settlers near Brown County's Iberia and experiencing a successful five year start in breaking the prairie sod and establishing their homestead, thirteen year old son John witnessed his entire family being killed by advancing Dakota in 1862. It seems that John never recovered from the resulting mental anguish....

Description
New Ulm, Minnesota, bore the brunt of the Sioux Uprising in 1862 during two battles, which decided the fate of what also became known as the Dakota Conflict. Drawn from Dr. Fritsche's county history, this work is of value not only because it provides a documentary history of the conflict, but also because it contributes to an understanding of how New Ulmers viewed and understood the conflict.
